'Anywhere Else in the World'

"Anywhere else in the world," he said,
"Anywhere else but here."
He wanted to be free of the toil, the boredom,
Of another angst filled year.

"My parents don't understand me," he said,
"My parents are such a bore."
So he packed up a bag, didn't lag,
and headed out the door.

Now 40 years later, the boy with the dream,
of seeing the world anew.
Is sitting, just sitting, outside on the walk,
wondering "What did I do?"

"Anywhere else in the world," he'd said,
"Anywhere else but here."
Now he's regretting, his lively new setting,
Reeking of liquor and beer.
